Description:
On Christmas Eve, New York Police Inspector John McClane arrives in Los Angeleswith the intention of reconciling with his wife, Holly, from whom he has been separated for six months when she moved here for work. He is driven by the company's hired driver, Argyle, to attend a Christmas party hosted by Holly's employer, the Nakatomi Corporation. Argyle waits for McClane in the parking lot in case the reconciliation with Holly fails. The policeman finds Holly. While McClane freshens up in the bathroom of the latter's office, at the same time the tower is attacked by a German criminal, Hans Gruber, and his heavily armed team, composed of Karl and his brother Tony, Theo, Alexander, Heinrich , Marco, Eddie, Uli, Franco, Kristoff, Fritz and James. Those inside the tower are taken hostage, except for McClane, who fled after hearing gunshots and screams. Gruber interrogates the leader of the American branch of Nakatomi, Joseph Takagi, to obtain the code for the building's safe. Gruber reveals that he plans to steal $640 million in bearer bonds and that he and his group are posing as terrorists to cover up the theft. Takagi refuses to cooperate and is shot in the head in front of McClane, hiding nearby. Theo is tasked with breaking into the safe. McClane, who is secretly monitoring the events, triggers a fire alarm in an unsuccessful attempt to attract the authorities. Tony is sent to find McClane. After a confrontation, McClane kills him, obtaining his gun and radio, which he uses to contact the Los Angeles Police Department.
McClane kills Marco and Heinrich, sent by Gruber to neutralize him, recovering the latter's bag of C-4 explosives and detonators. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, Powell is about to leave when McClane throws Marco's body onto his patrol car. Powell calls for reinforcements who arrive at full speed, a SWAT team besieges the building but is neutralized by gunfire downstairs and rocket launcher fire from James and Alexander. McClane manages to communicate with Powell via the radio taken from the attackers. In order to prevent the terrorists from causing more deaths, McClane throws C-4 into an elevator shaft, killing the pair and ending the police assault. Meanwhile, Holly's colleague, Harry Ellis, attempts to mediate between Gruber and McClane for the latter's surrender. McClane refuses and Ellis is shot in the head by Gruber, who decides to check for explosives set up on the roof. During the control, he meets McClane. He presents himself to him as an escaped hostage. McClane hands him a gun and Gruber tries to shoot him, but the gun is empty because McClane had figured out that it is Gruber. Karl, Franco and Fritz appear and start shooting McClane. The policeman manages to kill Fritz and Franco, but is seriously injured in the left foot by the broken glass of the office windows and is forced to flee, abandoning the detonators. Outside, FBI agents take charge of the situation and have the building's electricity cut off. As Gruber had anticipated, the power cut disables the final lock on the safe where the loot is, his team steals the bonds. Gruber requests that a helicopter be transported to the roof. The FBI agrees, intending to send helicopter gunships to take out the group, regardless of collateral damage to the hostages. A discouraged McClane contacts Powell, with whom a friendship begins. Powell tells McClane that he accidentally shot a child while on patrol and hasn't used his gun since. McClane then realizes that Gruber has the intent to blow up the roof—killing the hostages and FBI agents—to fake the death of his team. Karl confronts McClane and they fight. Gruber, watching the TV news, sees a report by reporter Richard Thornburg about McClane's children and realizes he is Holly's husband. The hostages are escorted to the roof, while Gruber keeps Holly with him. During the long fight, McClane incapacitates Karl, leaving him for dead. He goes to the roof, kills Uli and rescues the hostages just before Gruber blows up the roof, destroying the FBI helicopters. Meanwhile, Theo recovers their escape vehicle in the parking lot but is neutralized by Argyle, who was following the events on his radio. who watches the TV news, sees a report by reporter Richard Thornburg about McClane's children and realizes that he is Holly's husband. A tired and injured McClane finds Holly with Gruber and his remaining men, Eddie and Kristoff. After knocking out Kristoff, McClane confronts Gruber who orders him to put down his gun. McClane does this to spare Holly but distracts Gruber and Eddie with a laugh, grabs a gun hidden in her back, which contains two bullets. McClane wounds Gruber and kills Eddie. Gruber falls out a window but clings to Holly's wrist. He makes a last ditch attempt to kill the couple, but McClane unties Holly's wristwatch that Gruber had clung to, causing the latter to fall to his death from the top of the building.
The building is evacuated. McClane and Holly, outside, meet Powell. Suddenly, Karl, who has faked his death, appears and tries to shoot McClane but is killed by several revolver bullets by Powell. Thornburg arrives and tries to interview the McClanes, but Holly punches the reporter. Argyle drives the limo out of the parking lot and picks up McClane and Holly.
