Description:
Peter Venkman , Raymond "Ray" Stantz , and Egon Spengler are scientists at Columbia University who investigate the paranormal . Following their first encounter with a ghost manifesting in the New York Public Library , the dean fires them, dismissing the credibility of their research. In response, they create "Ghostbusters", a paranormal investigation and removal service. They convert a disused fire station, develop high-tech equipment to capture and contain ghosts, and convert a combo car into the "Ectomobile" with the ECTO-1 license plate to support their business.

Seeing their TV ad, a skeptical cellist, Dana Barrett, is initially dismissive, but calls them after a paranormal encounter in her kitchen . Recounting the event, she describes how she opened her refrigerator of hers and saw a creature that spoke a single word: " Zuul ". Venkman reassures her and takes a romantic interest in her, while Ray and Egon investigate her claims. Business is slow until they are hired to remove a ghost from the Sedgewick Hotel. There, Egon warns the group to never cross the energy currents of their proton pack weapons, as this could cause a catastrophic explosion. They capture their first ghost and deposit it in a special containment unit at the fire station.

Soon his business is prospering as paranormal activity in New York City increases . To deal with the lawsuit, they hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore . Suspected of his operation, Walter Peck, an inspector for the Environmental Protection Agency , asks to evaluate his equipment but leaves after Venkman insults him. Privately, Egon warns the team that the increase in supernatural activity is becoming dangerous and that his team is at risk of failing under the stress.

Venkman meets with Dana. He shares that Zuul was a Hittite demigod worshiped as a servant of " Gozer the Gozerian ", a shape-shifting god of destruction. He convinces Dana to discuss her case further over dinner. However, when Dana returns home, Zuul attacks her and supernaturally possesses her. In a nearby apartment , a nearly identical entity manifests, then pursues and possesses his neighbor, Louis Tully. Venkman arrives and finds the possessed Dana/Zuul, who claims to be "the Guardian". Louis, also possessed, is found by police officers and claims that he is "Vinz Clortho, Gozer's Keymaster". The Ghostbusters agree that they need to regroup but keep the pair apart.

Peck returns with the police and city workers to arrest the Ghostbusters and orders the deactivation of their ghost containment system. Stressed beyond his capacity, the zipper causes an explosion that frees the captured ghosts and the Ghostbusters are apprehended. Louis/Vinz manages to escape in the confusion and heads to the apartment building, where he meets up with Dana/Zuul. In jail, Ray and Egon reveal that Dana's building is the true source of the supernatural augmentation. The architect, Ivo Shandor, a genius and leader of a Gozer-worshipping cult, designed it to channel ghosts for the purpose of ending the world. Faced with chaos in the city, the Ghostbusters convince the mayor to release them despite Peck's protests.

On the roof of the apartment building, Dana/Zuul and Louis/Vinz open the door between dimensions and transform into supernatural creatures just as the Ghostbusters arrive. Gozer, in the form of a woman, arrives and Ray tries to reason with her first. When this fails, Gozer attacks from her, forcing the Ghostbusters to try to catch her, but she disappears. Her disembodied voice demands that the Ghostbusters "choose the shape of the destroyer". Ray inadvertently remembers a beloved petcorporate from his childhood, and Gozer reappears in the form of a giant marshmallow, "Stay Puft", who proceeds to attack the city. Egon tells the team to ignore his previous advice and cross his streams of proton energy into Gozer's portal. The resulting explosion destroys Gozer's marshmallow man form, banishing her from this dimension and closing the portal. The Ghostbusters rescue Dana and Louis from the rubble and are greeted on the street as heroes.
