Description:
San Francisco : Former rock star Johnny Boz is found dead, killed with an ice pick at the apex of a fiery embrace and Detective Nick Curran, nicknamed "Enforcer" (in the past he had accidentally shot and killed two tourists) , is in charge of handling the case. Suspicions fall on the writer and psychologistCatherine Tramell, who was with Boz at his club the night of the crime. Curran, together with his colleague Gus Moran, goes to interrogate Tramell and finds Roxy Hardy, her lover, in the house of the woman, who tells them that Catherine is in her house on the beach, saying she is certain of her innocence of Tramell. The two policemen, after speaking with her writer in her Stinson Beach villa, discover that in one of her books a man is killed in bed with the same weapon used to suppress Johnny Boz: an ice pick.
Catherine agrees to be questioned at the police station and, during the confrontation, crosses her legs revealing that she is not wearing panties; which leaves the cops breathless. At the bar that night, Nick gets into an altercation with Internal Affairs agent Marty Nielsen; immediately after the investigator accompanies his ex, psychologist Beth Garner, at her home. Once at his destination, Nick, as possessed, lashes out with irrepressible ardor on Beth, who at first complies with him but, when Nick starts using her strong ways, she tries to rebel, begging him to stop. However he rapes her. After the violence suffered by Nick, she Beth she tells him that she attended some courses with Catherine Tramell in Berkeley; she then asks Nick the reason for her unmotivated assault on her, but the man reacts nonchalantly and asks her for a cigarette . The psychologist tells him where to find her and orders him to leave.
Investigating, Nick discovers that Catherine has a troubled history behind her: her parents were killed in a boating accident when she was a teenager, leaving her heir to a fortune; one of her university professors, Noah Goldstein, was hit in his sleep with an ice pick when Catherine was attending UC Berkeley; her ex -boyfriend, boxer Manny Vasquez, was killed in a fight in Atlantic City ; Nick also discovers that many of Catherine's friends are murderers, including Hazel Dobkins, a woman who fatally stabbed her husband and her three children on Christmas Day 1950 .
Catherine taunts Nick, confessing that she knows everything about his past. Knowing that Beth is the only person in possession of the file with his information, Nick gets angry with Beth, who admits that she showed it to Nielsen (with whom Nick has a violent altercation in front of all the agents) because he had threatened to have him expelled from the police; Nielsen is found dead in his car that night, shot dead, and Nick is the prime suspect: he is therefore suspended, pending the results of a psychiatric report .
Nick falls in love with Catherine and the two begin a murky relationship strained by Roxy, who is jealous of Catherine and dies in her Lotus after trying to kill the policeman. Catherine plans to write a novel about a man who falls into the hands of the wrong person and is killed by them, and she chooses Nick as her character. It turns out that Roxy also had a criminal past: she had killed her two brothers with a razor when she was sixteen. Catherine later reveals that she had a sexual fling in college with Lisa Hoberman, who later turned out to be obsessed with her; Nick discovers that Lisa is none other than his ex, Beth; it also turns out that Beth had been married to a man who was later killed in a shootout.
Nick goes to Catherine's house, who is printing the last pages of her new book. After quickly reading a few lines, Nick realizes that the novel is about an investigator who lies dead with his legs sticking out of an elevator door. Catherine arrives and she explains that she has finished her book; ambiguously, she says goodbye to Nick. He sees Gus, who has arranged to meet a university friend of Catherine's in a hotel, and then discovers what really happened between Catherine and Beth. While Nick waits in the car, Gus enters the hotel elevator but, as he exits, a hooded figure leaps out and jabs Gus several times with an awl. Nick reaches Gus too late and finds him in agony with his legs sticking out of the elevator doors:
Just then Beth arrives, having arrived there after receiving Gus' message. As Beth reaches for her hand in her pocket, Nick takes Gus' gun and shoots Beth at her, killing her. Nick suspects she killed Gus, but there are only keys in her pocket. The police arrive and discover a blonde wig, an SFPD raincoat and an awl, the weapon used to kill Gus, in a ladder: the officers conclude that Beth abandoned the items on hearing Nick arrive; in Beth's house, ransacked, clues are found that would seem to indicate that she is the killer.
Nick returns to his home, where he finds Catherine waiting for him, and while the two make love she seems intent on grabbing the awl placed under the bed; but she, as she is about to kill him, lets go of the weapon because by now she is in love with him, and the two continue the sexual relationship.
