Things are not going well for seventeen-year-old Marty McFly ( Michael J. Fox ). His audition as a guitar player for the prom failed because his band was said to be too loud. It's no fun at home either. His father, George (Crispin Glover), is a big nerd who lets his boss Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) get the better of him. Biff has just wrecked George's car and blames George for it. Marty's mom drinks, and his brother and sister haven't gotten anywhere either. The only one who supports him is his girlfriend Jennifer (Claudia Wells). Since she is staying with her grandmother that night, she gives Marty her phone number written on a flyer for saving the bell tower. This tower is in danger of being demolished because the clock has stood still since a lightning strike in 1955.

Then Marty receives an invitation from his friend and inventor doctor Emmett L. Doc Brown ( Christopher Lloyd ) to come to the parking lot of the Twin Pines Mall in the evening. There, Doc shows off his latest invention: a time machine in the shape of a car, a DeLorean DMC-12 . Doc has been working on this machine for the past 30 years, and demonstrates it by sending his dog Einstein forward one minute in time. He then wants to test the time machine himself and asks Marty to record the experiment with a video camera. He explains that the car travels to a pre-programmed date when the car reaches 88 miles per hour (about 141 km/h), and plutoniumused as fuel to generate the 1.21 gigawatts needed for the journey. To demonstrate how to enter the date, Doc enters the date November 5, 1955 and explains that this is when he came up with the idea of ​​the flux capacitor , the device that makes time travel possible. Before he can embark on his journey into the past, however, a pair of Libyan terrorists appear from whom Doc illegally bought the plutonium in exchange for a bomb. Doc tells Marty that the bomb is actually made up of loose pinball machine parts. The Libyan terrorists have found out about this deception and come to the site of the experiment in a Volkswagen van to take revenge on Doc. With a machine gunthey shoot Doc dead. Marty jumps into the DeLorean and is chased by the Libyans. When it reaches the speed of 88 miles per hour , the car travels through time and unintentionally ends up in the year 1955 .

In the year 1955, he meets his parents, George McFly and Lorraine Baines, who are then teenagers like himself. However, his presence disrupts the timeline. He prevents the accident where Lorraine's father hit George and took him to their house where he met Lorraine. Instead, Marty is hit by a car and taken away, causing his mother to fall in love with him instead of his father. This creates the danger that Marty's parents will not have a relationship with each other. If that happens, Marty's very existence is at stake. This becomes clear when in a photo of his family, which Marty still had in his pocket, his brother and sister slowly start to fade away.

Marty seeks out the Doc from 1955 to ask for his help and manages to convince him with some difficulty, for example by talking about the flux capacitor. However, there is another problem: there is not enough plutonium left to generate the energy for another time travel back to the future ( Back to the Future ). The required amount of energy can only be obtained in a natural way by a (time and place unpredictable) lightning strike . However, thanks to the flyer, which he still has in his pocket, Marty knows that a few days after his arrival at exactly 10:04 p.m., lightning will strike the town's clock tower. Doc then builds a structure that can conduct lightning from the tower to the DeLorean to return Marty to 1985.

Before the plan can be carried out, Marty must get his parents together. But that's not easy. His mother is head over heels in love with him, and Biff Tannen (also a teenager at this time) has also set his sights on Lorraine. Marty makes a plan with George. That night he will bother Lorraine. Then when George steps in and "rescues" her from Marty, Lorraine will fall in love with him. However, the plan goes differently than expected. Marty is locked in the trunk of a car by Biff's friends, after which Biff herself harasses Lorraine. George, unaware that Biff and not Marty is in the car with Lorraine, comes to Lorraine's aid. When he sees Biff, he backs away at first, but then takes courage and knocks Biff out.

The danger has not passed yet. Marty knows from stories told by their parents that they first kissed on the dance floor during the prom that takes place that night. Unfortunately, the band's guitarist who was supposed to perform is injured when he frees Marty from the trunk of the car. Marty therefore fills in for him. Just as Marty begins to disappear as well, George and Lorraine kiss, and the timeline is restored. Marty continues to play for a while. At first he plays rock 'n' roll as it was just emerging in the fifties , but gradually more and more rough with guitar solos as were common in the eighties , until everyone stands dumbfounded looking at him.

Before returning to 1985, Marty tries to inform Doc of his death in 1985. He writes him a letter, but Doc doesn't want to hear about it, because he knows that knowledge about the future can damage the timeline. To still warn Doc, Marty sets the time machine to return to 1985 eleven minutes earlier than he originally left. However, due to the high speed, Marty crashes into the facade of a store on his return. As a result, the DeLorean refuses service, and Marty is still late. He just sees how Doc is shot and the one week younger version of himself with the DeLorean flees to 1955. However, it turns out that Doc has read the letter from 1955 and is wearing a bulletproof vest.

The next morning, Doc leaves with the DeLorean to the year 2015. When Marty returns home in 1985, it turns out that his time travel has had an impact on the future. So much so that he hardly recognizes his family. But the changes are positive: he left an underclass family and returns in a middle class environment. He has prevented his mother from becoming an alcoholic and he has taught his father to stand up for himself. As a result, Biff is not George's boss but vice versa. Plus, Biff has turned into a dumb ass. It also turns out that Marty now has a 4x4 jeep.

Just as Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer are back together, the Doc returns from the future, dressed futuristically. He tells Marty and Jennifer to come along because something would go wrong with their future children. Jennifer and Marty get in, and we see that the DeLorean can fly.
